Case studies

Air-conditioning system for buses

Planning / Implementation / Main components

Partial project: compressor developed and manufactured by Bock Kältemaschinen GmbH

Refrigerant

CO2

System start-up

Research project since 1994

For some time now, carbon dioxide (R744) has been tested for use as a natural alternative refrigerant to counteract the problem of leakages in mobile air-conditioning systems used in cars and buses.

Demands

To replace HFC refrigerant R134a with the natural refrigerant carbon dioxide

Solution

To develop a compressor for the transcritical carbon dioxide-process

Technical data:

Type of facility (circuit)

single-stage, direct evaporation

Refrigerant

CO2 (R744)

Refrigerating capacity

approx. 30 kW

Main components

2-cylinder piston compressor, HP: 90-140 bar, LP: at approx. -10 to +10 °C approx. 25-45 bar

Special features / Comments

Joint project with the company Konvekta, still at the developmental stage.
