New GTZ publication on natural refrigerants The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (German Technical Cooperation, GTZ) has issued an English-language publication on natural refrigerants as part of its Proklima environmental programme: “Natural Refrigerants. Sustainable Ozone- and Climate-Friendly Alternatives to HCFCs”. The rationale behind the publication is the early exit from manufacture and use of partially halogenated hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) resolved at Montreal in 2007, which raises challenges especially for developing countries. In this connection, natural refrigerants such as ammonia, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons are an obvious choice as a climate-neutral alternative, write the authors. In 31 articles, representatives from politics, business and industry present the political and legal framework, rate the use of natural refrigerants for various applications and showcase projects where refrigeration systems were successfully converted from using HCFCs to natural refrigerants.
