Germany promotes climate protection in commercial refrigeration

The German Federal Environment Ministry has launched a national climate-protection initiative to promote investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy. Up to EUR 400 million, raised from the sale of CO2 emission rights, will be available for the initiative in 2008. In commercial refrigeration – one of four new programmes – this funding will be used to promote the increased use of environment-friendly technology in Germany through grants for consultation and investment. For existing refrigeration systems, the amount of funding available depends on the type of refrigerant used. Natural refrigerants are given preferential treatment, receiving 25% of the net cost of investment, as opposed to systems that use synthetic refrigerants (which will receive 15%). New systems will only receive funding if they use natural refrigerants. These incentives aim to boost sales of energy-efficient technology, cut costs and make commercial refrigeration more economical throughout Germany.
